FUEL TANK LINER IS DESIGNED TO SEAL LEAKS AND HELP AS A PREVENTATIVE AGAINST RUST. M.E.K. IS USED TO CLEAN AND PREP THE TANK BEFORE LINING IS USED.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TANK LINER:

Q: Can I line the tank with gas in it?

A: NO. Remove all fuel, sending unit, float, feed lines, filters and anything that could be clogged by the liner or made of plastic that the liner may peel away from.

 

Q: Do I need to remove the rust from the inside of the tank?

A: Technically no, but if there is enough rust in the tank the rust can or will easily break off from the tank and become a contaminant in the tank. So we recommend that excess rust and rust chunks be removed by tapping on the tank with a rubber mallet or by tumbling with a piece of chain in the tank so the liner can seal any remaining rust between the liner and the tank metal. Flush out any debris.

 

Q: How big of a hole or a crack will the tank liner seal?

A: If there are leaks greater than one thirty-second of an inch (1/32”) they should be patched by soldering or epoxy. If the leaks were severe or not all rust was removed, it may be necessary to use a second coat after the first coat has dried completely.

 

Q: How long can I store tank liner after it’s been opened?

A: Opened tank liner has been exposed to oxygen and as a result it has a short shelf life-approximately that of an opened can of latex paint.

 

Q: On a motorcycle tank will tank liner harm my paint?

A: YES. Both M.E.K. and tank liner will damage paint. You can successfully line painted motorcycle tanks but you need to be absolutely sure the M.E.K. or liner doesn’t touch the paint.

 

Q: On a motorcycle tank can I line over a competition brand product liner?

A: Do not line over a lined tank of any product other than Northern Tank Liner. You can re-line a competition brand lined tank only after using the appropriate solvent chemical such as Northern Tank Prep. M.E.K. to remove the previous liner. Tank liner is a polymer designed to adhere to bare metal surfaces and will not stick to the vinyl surface of a lined tank.

 

Q: Can I apply a second coat of Northern Tank Liner?

A: YES. However it is recommended that the first coat be completely dry before applying the second coat.

 

Q: Can I line fiberglass or plastic tanks?

A: NO. A polymer won’t adhere to fiberglass or plastic.

 

Q: Can I line oil or hydraulic tanks?

A: YES. As long as the operating oil temps in the tank stay below 250 degrees F. Temps higher that 250 degrees F will break down the liner.

 

Q: What fuels can be used in lined tanks?

A: Usually all commercially available gasoline. Diesel fuels, oils, hydraulic oils are ok- it can be used with Biodiesel fuel blends up to and including B20. Benzenes, Alcohol, Methanol, Nitro Methane, Carbon Tetrachloride, Acetone, M.E.K. etc cannot be used with tank liner.

 

Q: Does tank liner stay color fast after drying?

A: NO. The color is a dye used to help you see the product - its natural color is clear. During use, some of the dye in the dried liner will wash into the fuel. Cars will never see this, but motorcycles that use clear fuel lines may have a blue tint that is noticeable. The dye doesn’t affect engine operation and will go away after a few tanks of fuel.

 

Q: Can I use tank liner for water tanks?

A: NO. Prolonged exposure to water will break down the liner. Contact with tank liner in any water that may be used by people or animals is never advised.
